Ouray enjoys generally mild daytime temperatures and more sunshine than Southern California during the spectacular winter season.

This accompanied by the geothermal strata (witnessed by the abundant hot springs in the valley), means that Ouray’s winter climate is totally different than the surrounding area. The rock cliffs that surround Ouray gather heat during the sunny days and radiate it back at night, creating a perfect setup for winter guests. The guests include the many deer and elk that frequently visit the town for a munch on the grass next to the hot springs!!

captionOuray is always covered in a brilliant white blanket of snow in the winter so snow boots are a must. Many of our winter visitors are is interested in our unique ice park. The Ice Park is becoming an international destination, as it is the first of its kind in the world. The parks formation has defiantly been a local community effort and is made up of a sophisticated water and ice making system that produces over 170 climbing routes and is being expanded every year. Although many come to climb here, the park provides a rare opportunity for observers to watch ice climbing enthusiasts scale the frozen waterfalls. The routes vary in difficulty from beginners on up and hosts events such as ‘chicks with picks’ a popular event for women climbers. There are guiding services in town, which we can put you in touch with if you would like to give this very picturesque sport a try.

For others Ouray provides a more affordable base for skiing at the famous telluride ski resort. The Discount Telluride ski package offers 40% discount on telluride lift tickets and ½ price hot springs pool passes. Unlike many other discounts this one has no restriction to it; it is available every day, all winter. For more local skiing there is a small hill with one tow on it in town, skiing here is for free.

Snow shoeing, Cross country skiing at Ironton park, backcountry skiing at red mountain pass and soaking in the hot springs are a few of the other wonderful activities to enjoy in Ouray at this time of year.

Ouray, and the San Juan Mountains surrounding this small community, are an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. There isn’t any form of outdoor sport that can’t be found in the immediate area.
You don’t have to be sports junky to enjoy Ouray though. We have an outstanding variety of shops and galleries, a very popular museum, a historical walking tour, mine tours, and several casual walking paths that are great for those who aren’t interested in the physical demands of our other outdoor activities. We also have a movie theater that shows first-run movies and other evening entertainment throughout the summer months.
