Waterfalls are highlight of this season. Ouray is located in a U shaped glacial carved valley, so there is a lot of ‘drop’ for the waterfalls to cascade off. The advance of warm weather turns the winters snow and ice into breathtaking waterfalls. The highest water flow normally occurs the first week of June. However May sees the Uncompahgre River that runs through Ouray turn into a raging torrent, this is an exhilarating sight to observe.

When the Oak and Aspen trees begin to bud, locals exchange their snow boots for hiking boots and ready themselves for the drying out of the trails and roads.

Late spring sees less of a crowd than summer, with slightly cooler temperatures and the mountains shining in their spring awakeness.
