This is Ouray’s best kept secret; the San Juan Mountains are covered in Aspen and scrub oak making the fall colors truly amazing. The palette of colors includes gold, yellow, orange and even red in some years. This foreground of color is often backed by the white of early snows and of course the jagged peaks of the surrounding mountains. We have had many photographers and artists visit our house at this time of year to partake in the beauty of the area. Because of its visual significance and low key lifestyle, many artists reside in Ouray. They provide workshops at this time of year for budding artists.

People choose many ways to view the colors, hiking, biking, car rides on the ‘Million dollar highway’ or off road by jeep. Some also choose to just sit on our beautiful porch and view the colors from the comfort of home.

The good thing is that the days are still often warm with a slight nip to the mornings and evenings, this enables many of the summer activities to last well into the fall.
Layered clothing is a must, especially if you are visiting the high country as the range in temperature can be large from t shirts in the middle of the day to hats and gloves in the evening.
